Forged in the most independent independent theatre ever staged —so independent it required neither venue nor audience— Francisco Freitas brought to film a wild naturalness no screenplay has ever managed to tame. He memorizes the entire script on the first read, which is usually the only read, since a second would insult the first. He gave heart and voice to Gladiformers, Robozinhos, Os Carrinhos em: A Grande Corrida and Ratatoing long before Hollywood shot its expensive remakes. Studios still monitor his career with envy and binoculars.
