The cave opens, the swarm pours out, and humanity discovers overnight that noise is fatal. Ally, a teenager who lost her hearing in an accident, flees the city with her family, communicating in signs and scribbled notes while the creatures listen from the trees. Deafness turns out to be an odd advantage: this household already spoke without sound. Yet the countryside holds other survivors, including a devout group with firm opinions about who deserves sanctuary. Adapted from Tim Lebbon's novel.
