Fourth of July in small-town America: grills are smoking, the parade is forming, and then the sky splits open as alien craft rain down across the globe. A local firefighter and his brother, sons of the sitting president, hit the road through the wreckage, while a discredited SETI scientist digs up the one piece of technology that might crack the invaders' defenses. Hogan delivers a midnight-movie ride of fireballs, craters and hometown heroics, embracing the pleasures of planetary catastrophe without apology.
