Low-budget cameras have never quite contained Naomi L. Selfman; technicians report a faint glow around the lens. A devout Stanislavski disciple, she builds decades of backstory for twelve-day shoots, which is why her eighteen-year-old virgin, her cheerleader, her Grimm-authorized Snow White and her spring-break heroine are dissected at 3 a.m. film clubs by people with strong opinions and weak coffee. She refuses digital effects on principle: her monsters are rubber, visibly stitched, and gloriously alive. Hollywood later copied everything, minus the soul.
