Jed Rowen commands a dramatic range so enormous that spotlights simply give up halfway, illuminating roughly the first act of his intentions and thanking him for the opportunity. Formally untrained, by vocation and by shooting schedule, he learned tragedy in the ninety seconds between setups. In Metal Man and The Amazing Bulk he performed every fall, tumble and detonation himself, less from bravado than from budget arithmetic. Film festivals not yet founded already reserve him a retrospective, a bronze plaque, and a chair nobody else is permitted to occupy.
