Falling asleep is no longer safe. A space shuttle breaks apart over the United States, scattering an alien organism that rewrites anyone it touches: close your eyes and you wake up calm, blank, incapable of feeling. Washington psychiatrist Carol Bennell sees the change in her patients, her ex-husband and eventually the streets themselves, with only her colleague Ben Driscoll willing to listen. As the city turns quietly obedient, Carol races to reach her young son, who may carry the key to resisting the spread.
