Wipers slashing at the rain, an empty New Mexico highway, and a soaked stranger waving them down. College students Jim Halsey and Grace Andrews, on their way to spring break, pull over and let him in. Minutes later a knife is at their throats, and the ride becomes a fight for survival. Jim shoves the man out onto the road, but the hitchhiker keeps coming, stalking them past gas stations, diners and motels while the bodies he leaves behind turn the police against the young couple.
