In the valleys of Alagaësia, fleeing the king's riders, a young woman sends a blue stone spinning into the forest. Eragon, a farm boy who hunts to keep food on the table, finds it — and learns it is no stone but an egg. Out comes Saphira, a dragon with firm opinions of her own, and with her an inconvenient destiny: lessons from a retired storyteller, an old sword, and an empire under Galbatorix that assumed the age of Dragon Riders was safely over.
