Charlie Watson is weeks from turning eighteen and losing whatever still anchors her: her father's memory, his tools, the sense of belonging somewhere. In a coastal California junkyard in 1987, she finds a battered yellow Beetle and takes it home to repair. The car, it turns out, has opinions of its own. Wounded and voiceless, a scout from a distant war is hiding from those hunting him, and Charlie's garage becomes the safest place either of them has known.
